ReLEx SMILE Small Incision Lenticule Extraction

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a relatively new minimally invasive laser vision correction technique that utilizes the Carl Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser system. It can correct up to 1000 degrees of myopia and 500 degrees of astigmatism. Due to its different principles compared to traditional LASIK laser vision correction, the SMILE procedure is faster, involves a smaller incision, and has a milder post-operative dry eye condition compared to LASIK. It also avoids complications related to the creation of a corneal flap. These advantages have made SMILE increasingly popular, with over 7 million SMILE cases worldwide as of 2022.

The process of SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) laser vision correction

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) laser vision correction is a single-step technique in which the doctor uses a laser to directly reshape the middle layer of the cornea. Simultaneously, a small incision of 2-4 millimeters is made to extract the reshaped portion of the cornea through the incision, resulting in a change in corneal curvature for vision correction. The procedure eliminates the need for creating a corneal flap, reducing the wound area by approximately 80% and promoting better wound healing. SMILE laser vision correction involves laser cutting of the cornea without any odor, while LASIK laser vision correction can produce a burning smell during corneal ablation with the laser. As a result, customers may feel more at ease and comfortable during the SMILE correction process.

Step 3

The laser directly cuts the middle layer of the cornea.

The laser creates an incision of approximately 2-4mm.

The section that has been cut is extracted through the incision.

Benefits of SMILE Laser Vision Correction

  • Can be completed for both eyes in as fast as 4-5 minutes
  • Eliminates the need for creating a corneal flap, reducing the wound area by over 80%
  • The laser correction process is safe and comfortable
  • No burning smell during the correction process as no laser ablation is required
  • No risk of flap displacement due to impact during vigorous physical activities after the correction
  • Highly stable vision correction; satisfaction rate approaching 100% in terms of visual improvement
  • Reduces the occurrence of post-correction dry eyes and infections

Eligible Candidates

Can correct myopia up to a maximum of 1000 degrees and astigmatism up to a maximum of 500 degrees.

What is Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking Surgery?

The purpose of corneal collagen cross-linking surgery is to strengthen the cornea by increasing the number of "anchors" that connect collagen fibers together, enhancing the resilience of the cornea and reducing damage to the corneal layers during the procedure. The doctor will administer eye drops containing vitamin B2 (riboflavin) to the patient's eyes and then expose the eyes to UVA light for approximately 1 minute. This process promotes the binding of collagen proteins in the corneal fibers, achieving corneal cross-linking and strengthening.

Who Should Consider Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (SMILE XTRA) Surgery?

  • Individuals with relatively thin corneas
  • Individuals who require simultaneous SMILE/LASIK correction due to high myopia
  • Individuals who need corneal reinforcement to reduce the chance of regression
  • Individuals with keratoconus or corneal degeneration

Is Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (Smile XTRA) Surgery Necessary?

No, it is not necessary. The doctor will make recommendations based on your eye condition. If you have relatively thin corneas or severe myopia, the doctor may suggest undergoing corneal collagen cross-linking surgery first to strengthen the cornea and reduce the risk of post-correction regression.
